Kundalini Awakening

Posted January 2nd, 2010

Kundalini energy is the energy in you that sits at the base of your spine, in the root chakra.

It awakens when you start meditating, visualizing, practice yoga, Reiki or doing other spiritual activities.

The Question brought forward by a recent Student:

What is Kundalini Energy? Do we all have an Awakening?

I will give you a bit of information surrounding this Energy and it’s awakening.  It would take a book to bring forward all the information and understanding of the Kundalini Energy…. So let’s start with some basic knowledge here….

It is important to understand this kind of energy for everyone who meditates, Reiki or other spiritual practices. You may start experiencing something unusual energetically; and may not know what to call your experience.  Here is a little information to help you process this journey.

Kundalini is an energy that exists in everyone’s body, usually in a dormant state. This means that most people never feel it and never know it is there. But in a very few people, perhaps one in one thousand, this energy becomes aroused, activated. This can be a happy event or it can be scary and disruptive, depending on whether you aroused your Kundalini
on purpose or by accident.

Kundalini energy awakening is a natural process
that helps you become more conscious. When activated, it starts going up your chakras till it reaches the crown chakra and you may become enlightened (that happens over time, of course).

Chakras are energy centers in the human subtle body energy system that are an integral part the individual processing and absorption of universal energies, including Kundalini energy. Through the practice of Meditation and Reiki, Kundalini Energy rises through the chakra system of the human body, cleansing stagnant energies and allowing for spiritual growth, self-realization and enlightenment. Meditation and Reiki will promote and open the flow of this energy.

When Kundalini energy rises through each Chakra, it cleanses the stagnant energy in that center and this allows much more life force energy to flow through the human chakra system. According to Anna Voigt in The Chakra Workbook, “although the term Kundalini… comes from the Tantra Yoga traditions, a phenomenon akin to the Kundalini experience is recognized in all of the shamanic traditions and mystical paths, in nearly all of the worlds’ major religions, and in genuine occult traditions. All of these traditions recognize the significance of Kundalini as a key to “divinizing” or “spiritualizing” a human being. From the perspective of an individual spiritual seeker, it is a path to enlightenment, liberation, or Self-realization.” When Kundalini rises through the Chakra system is facilitates a process of cleansing and awakening to higher consciousness in that center.

Chakra Cleansing

Throughout our daily lives and years of socialization we accumulate and hold onto low vibrational emotions, though patterns, behaviors, memories and programming. It is in the chakra system that we hold onto and experience these traumas, negative experiences and limiting agreements (thoughts & beliefs) that we make with ourselves about our self and the world. These low vibrational energetic patterns stay stored in our body’s energy system unless we actively cleanse them through energy work, meditation, Reiki or other spiritual practices, or until Kundalini rises spontaneously in an individual, speeding up the evolutionary process of your spiritual growth.

Low vibration means that the frequency of the emotion, thought, or memory is denser than the high vibration of light, which is pure life source. Everything is seen as energy, then we all have the potential to be a high vibrational being, a clear channel for universal love and light to flow through us, but these low vibrations such as fear, anger, resentment, guilt and judgment, among others, block your full potential.

Kundalini is a dormant energy within most people…In Hindu mythology; Kundalini is a serpent goddess who lies asleep at the base of the spine, coiled three and a half times around the first chakra. Her name is Kundalini Shakti, and she represents the unfolding of the divine Shakti energy, the energizing potential of life itself, a living goddess who enlivens all things.

So with that knowledge, you can see under certain circumstances, the Kundalini energy awakens and begins to rise through the body, piercing and opening the chakras as she moves in her undulating, snake-like fashion. As Kundalini releases stored and blocked energies, her movement can be quite intense, sometimes emotional, and can lead to physical discomforts.  This is temporary, but more so- the process of the awakening.  I see it as a cleansing.

As I have mentioned, circumstances that stimulate Kundalini awakening are many and varied, but are usually triggered by such things as extended periods of meditation, Reiki, fasting, stress, trauma, psychedelic drugs, or near death experiences.

Kundalini is a condensed, primal force, similar to the potential energy found in water. When released, it creates a vertical connection between the chakras by opening the subtle channels known as nadi, most specifically, the central channel that moves up the spine called sushumna. If you put water through a small hose at very high pressure, the end of the hose will undulate or surge-like a snake. Similarly, the intense energy of Kundalini undulates in the body as it rises through the chakras.

Kundalini can also be seen as a result of the chakras connecting
to each other. Theoretically, as the chakras enlarge, the spinning of one can enhance the spinning of the one above or below it.

Kundalini is basically a healing force, but as I has I’ve said, effects can sometimes be emotional or unpleasant- “It is an Awakening”. Such effects may last for minutes, days or a period of time, it depends on you and how you choose to process what is before you.  In truth, it is a gift.

If you find yourself processing some uncomfortable Kundalini awakening symptoms, be kind to yourself, “Breathe” …. Here are a few suggestions;

1) Purify the body. Abstain from recreational drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine, prescription drugs. Avoid food additives, high sugars, or greasy foods. Eat well, especially protein which is generally grounding. Get massage and vigorous exercise.
2) Reduce stress. If you are in for a major spiritual transformation, make time for the necessary changes in your life. You may need to devote more time to your spirituality or health.
3) Find Support. Share with others who have knowledge of this experience.
4) Educate yourself. Read about Kundalini, Kundalini awakening, Reiki and learn about Chakras.
5) Treat underlying psychological issues. As Kundalini brings up unresolved issues, this is the best time to deal with them. It will make the process smoother.
6) Examine your spiritual practices. If you have not been practicing meditation, yoga, Reiki or some spiritual practice, it may be time to begin. You might need to stop meditating for a while if it increases unpleasant Kundalini awakening symptoms. See what increases or decreases the unpleasant effects.
7) Practice grounding. Kundalini is most difficult when the energy is moving upward without enough energy moving downward to balance. Investigate the possibility of the first chakra issues that need to be resolved in order to give a firmer base. Practice grounding exercise daily.

And now I would like to wish you all a very prosperous New Year 2010…
Make your list of affirmations and say them everyday.  Open your mind to “Change”, and be aware of your thoughts, your behaviors, and your actions and allow the process… with every change in life whether it feels positive or negative, light or heavy, gain or loss, every soft lesson, every heavy lesson…. Change is going to happen in life, with every change there is a gift…. Always!

Just this year I had a Kundalini experience while I was at work, and at first I was frightened and thought I should go tot he hospital because I felt like I couldn’t see, and that I was going to pass out and a feeling in my body that I had never felt before nor did I understand, but instead I took a couple of deep breaths and then became aware of the energy that was growing up my spine and realized what was happening. I had been looking forward to a Kundalini awakening but had expected something like that to happen somewhere else so it took me by surprise. I think that more people need to be made aware that it is even possible so that when it does happen to them they can just relax and enjoy it rather then be scared and confused. Thanks for the post!

Kimberlee: Once while doing Reiki (hand position over sacrum), my spine started vibrating. I mean really shaking. I got so scared and murmured for it to stop. It did stop. Instantly. Was this kundalini energy? I don’t think I really want this feeling again. It feels out of control. Kim, have you had kundalini experiences?

Hi there, it is so nice to see that many people are aware of this, however I keep having episodes happen to me and I am not sure if it is kundalini or not and I thought I would share it in hope of a kind advice. It first started when I was about 10 and I was shaking and crying and went into some deep state of sleep for 4 hours and my parents could not wake me until I did myslef. Then I had another one when I was 17-18 and it was scary…I was shaking again and breathing was hectic and as I was standing up I got so stif that I had to lay in bed while the episode continued and my arms and hands spread out and I could not move them while cold and hot waves were going through my body and I told my mother(i don’t know what made me say this) ‘go and get a bucket of cold water and salt’ and when she did I put my hands in it as I could feel my skin of my fingertips so hot and could possibly explode. It lasted about 15 minutes and then for the nextfew days my hands were very red. Then I had the next on when I was about 21 in my husband’s bathroom floor…it just seems to make you not stand up when it starts happening but thank god i had a sink near by so i was able to put my hands under the stream. I had another one just a day ago and it always starts with a huge pounding headache and a feeling of wanting to vomit so strong but you never actually vomit and then it happened again uncontrollable tears with steady moans almost as when giving birth and the strange breathing and stiff body and hands and it lasted for 10-15 minutes and after it headache was gone and vomiting feeling gone too.

Please, if this seems as if I have had kundalini experience could you kindly tell me or if not if you have any idea what it could be I would be grateful for any info my way :) thank you
