Reiki and Western Medicine
Question: If I am practicing Reiki and other Healing Modalities, can I stop seeing my doctor and stop medications?
Answer; Well, No, not without discussing it with your doctor. But, I would look closer at the core issues of your dis-comforts, dis-orders or illness…. I will answer this question with information to bring forward guidance….
Well, one thing for sure, we can’t deny worldwide that there is a general acceptance of the superiority of Western Medicine over all the healing arts. When in the past, humanity has been plagued by virus and bacteria such as the Black Death, the yellow fever, and other epidemics that killed thousands, now we can say that we are in full control of even the smallest strain of virus and bacteria.
If we take a quick review, we know our lifespan has significantly increased, health care has really improved and we have been dependent on the solutions that modern medicine provides. In fact, western medicine has been so proud- even to the point of ridiculing various types of alternative medicine such as massage, meditation, Reiki energy healing and many other modalities.
Let’s take a look at the other side of Western Medicine, Not all of western medicine can be considered good; yes, we were able to develop vaccinations and immunizations, yet we have in effect helped virus develop into new and difficult strains. In fact, many diseases existing today are an indirect result of modern medicine. Another backlash is that we have been fixated with the short term solutions to illness provided by modern medicine and have forgotten to analyze the other aspects or the deeper root cause of disease. Let’s take the common headache as an example; every time we have a headache, we usually take a pain reliever. But do you ever really analyze the stress or psychological, emotional and spiritual dimensions of having a headache? We have not been taught or even think that an honest-to-goodness reflection and meditation could have the same effect as pharmaceuticals. Here lays the situation, we have been stressing too much on the physical body and have totally forgotten the role of the heart, the mind, and the spirit (life-force) to the question of health or disease.
Take a minute and ask yourself, has your life become to stressful? Do you move and act like a robot, really working hard energetically, mentally and physically to make a living, without taking some time to regain balance? Do you even know how to regain balance or have you ever considered that? Over time stress will take its toll on your health, on your emotional well being and on your emotional state. Modern medicine has cures for the manifestations and symptoms of the disease but not the root cause. Take into consideration the perception here, if your lifestyle and the current societal structures compel you to work like a machine and to believe everything you are told to think is truth, maybe it is time to reflect and make some changes; is it time for some balance!
So, how do you reflect? Energy is central to everything you do and is actually a basic premise of Eastern medicine but has no name in Western Medicine. Hindu, Chinese, and Japanese healing arts have a name for different types of energy such as chi, ki, shen, jing, and utilize this knowledge for healing. But in fact,
alternative healing has a more comprehensive and encompassing framework that considers the emotional, mental, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of any dis-comfort, illness or dis-ease. Every aspect of any dis-ease start with thoughts having their impact on your ‘body’s energy centers’ called chakras. A few quite moments, meditation, affirmations and Reiki actually work wonders promoting a positive flow of energy, good health and well-being as a whole. Find a few minutes throughout the day to breathe, meditate in one of its many forms, learn and practice Reiki or other modalities…. You really only need a few moments throughout the day to start…. First thing in the morning, lunch break or the moments in bed at night, quiet time, you will find the time, you must! I find that when I take time to re-group, decompress and reflect, I am able to come back stronger, balanced and relaxed; even if that means “turn the TV, phone and chaos off to retreat to the balcony with a cup of hot tea! The greatest masters of all time always took a week or two at a time to reflect in solitude.
Your emotion; which is a given fact of life must be factored in as a major cause of dis-ease. It is a fact that when you have negative thoughts, unbalanced energy or stressful emotions, your immune systems collapse. Your energy body will experience blockage and your physical body becomes susceptible to various types of illness, dis-ease and infections. That works both ways, on the other hand; when you experience love, happiness or excitement and you have positive thoughts, your life-force (energy), spiritual body and immune system becomes stronger, and your positive thoughts promote a constant flow in your life force or energetic balance, promoting your well being at every level. Dis-ease is due to your life force misalignment. By realigning yourself to be in harmony with the spiritual force, the life-force, which makes up the entire universe- your physical, emotional, and even spiritual ailments will disappear.
In Japan, the ancient healing art taught by Reiki Master Teachers considers all these as movements and dynamics of energy; the secret in healing is therefore wholesome, all-sided, and grounded in the various aspects of self and lifestyle; starting with your thoughts, attitude and perceptions or your life.
I will be the first to tell you there is a place for both Western and Eastern Medicine. They must work together and not against each other.
Within each discipline, there is an enormous amount of time tested information that has its own logic and usefulness. Both Western and Eastern systems have their place. I believe that the greatest strength of Western Medicine is in its trauma care and therapies for acute situations, while Eastern medicine excels in the areas of chronic situations and preventive medicine.
Reiki is now widely practiced in the western world particularly in the United States, Europe and growing. Reiki Teachers and Practitioners are now working in hospitals where they assist patients during critical medical procedures.
- One of the largest hospitals in northern California is the California Pacific Medical Center and here, Dr. Mike Cantwell, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases, provides one to three hour-long Reiki sessions. When asked how Reiki helps his patients Cantwell said, “I have found Reiki to be useful in the treatment of acute illnesses such as musculoskeletal injury, pain, headache, acute infections and asthma. Reiki is also useful for patients with chronic illnesses especially those associated with chronic pain.”
- Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is one of the leading cardiovascular surgeons in the United States was one of the
first to include a Reiki practitioner in his department at The Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre in New York City where he runs the heart assist device program and the Complementary Care Centre. The New York Times Magazine reported that Dr. Oz has allowed the use of Reiki during open heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Says Dr. Oz: “Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals.”
Traditional Reiki Master Teachers and practitioners believe that we all have the ability to heal ourselves because universal energy flows through each of us. But the stress of modern living usually blocks this flow. However, a person who has a regular spiritual practice that includes silence, solitude and any form of meditation or prayer can readily access Reiki and use it for self-healing. You can follow the basic hand positions for self-healing and with practice you can experience this very simple yet immensely powerful natural way of healing.
