Reiki Perceptions “Step Outside the Box”

Posted June 18th, 2009

Thinking “outside of the box” requires a person to be willing to think past accepted concepts and perspectives, to strive for the different. Thinking outside the box means seeking creative ideas; this form of pondering requires practice.

Learn to develop a new approach to solve problems and be open to new possibilities that don’t conform to the conventional ideas. As you go beyond the normal, and step into your individual power or creative thought you become empowered with alternative wisdom.

So give this some thought, pause, take a breath and explore all your options. Don’t settle for the first “reaction” that may come to your mind. Look at every angle by viewing things from a clean pair of glasses, a new point of view.

Take a moment and become present in your conversations and be a good listener; you’ll hear things you’ve never heard before. The opinions presented to you could lead to solutions- so listen carefully when someone is speaking.

I recently posed the question:

Change the way your mind thinks by allowing yourself to be creative, be willing to learn and change. What does it mean to think abstractly?

Response from Community Members-

*Look up and Look at the horizon- “outside the box”- which I found to be an appropriate title. Rick S. Ohio

*Practice thinking opposite of what comes natural. If you’re trained to see the glass half-empty then see it half-full. If money never mattered then live like it does. These experiments will help re-train your mind to re-frame your thoughts. Shift your thoughts-Shifts you’re Life!  Susie B. New Jersey

*Read things that aren’t particularly what you’d normally choose. Pick up a book that would not be on your best seller list and read it. Write about it. Read science, history, non-fiction and fiction. Study a new language, art or modality; might I suggest Kimberlee’s book on Reiki for one.  This will stimulate your mind to think “outside of the box”. Cindy W. St. Louis

*Determine not to settle for status quo. Strive for the unconventional ways, reach for the stars, and be unique. Don’t be afraid of people placing judgment it’s a lesson for us all.  Eddy C. California

Perception

The philosophy of perception concerns how mental processes and symbols depend on the world internal and external to the perceiver. Our perception of the external world begins with the senses, which lead us to generate experiential concepts representing the world around us, within a mental framework relating new concepts to preexisting ones. Perception leads to a person’s view of the world.

So what is your perception of Reiki?
Do you think “outside the box”?

When it comes to the matter of a definition of Reiki, a commonly held view among Reiki practitioners is: “don’t think too much about it – when you learn and experienced the attunement to Reiki, is experiential - just do it…the energy is there”  - well, in one sense, you could say there is some truth in that.

On the other hand, “think outside the box”, as we have all heard at one time or another: “With your thoughts you shape your reality”.  So, I would suggest: “With your thoughts you shape your Reiki…” you get what you get, when you do what you do!

The usual way in which Reiki Teachers tend to explain Reiki to new students, is easy to understand; the simplistic approach- the “Rei” being translated as “Universal”, though in essence, it refers to something Spiritual, Sacred, or can mean Soul.  “Ki”, translated simply as “Life-Force Energy”, I should mention that it also implies - effect of energy in action.  Click To Read More

It’s interesting to take note of the various perceptions and attitudes that different Reiki Teachers assume and how those attitudes change from situation to situation. I’d like to take a closer look at this here.

Newcomers to Reiki are virtually always fascinated with the wonder of Reiki and this fascination is always such a great pleasure to encourage and feed. Questions from new Reiki Practitioners always bring such insight and inspiration to me. Whether you are new and learning Reiki, a Reiki Master or you are a Reiki Teacher; a good practice would be “open your mind - step outside the box” and set your ego mind aside before participating in any Reiki activities and allow yourself to experience them anew… you’ll be able to learn and share a lot more and enjoy yourself more in the process.

Another attitude I’ve frequently seen in Reiki paths is the extended spirituality attitude. In many cases spirituality is often far too neglected in people’s lives.  When Reiki Practitioners are first exposed to some of the deeper spiritual aspects, those particular doors of perception are thrown open and they find themselves stepping “outside the box” of familiar thoughts, fears and patterns, its like a part of them that was missing has finally been found. This new reconnection creates a light that shines from within, creates a new flow of energy in the chakras and promotes healing at every level.

One Reiki attitude I have never been captivated by is a self-proclaimed Reiki expert who believes they have all the answers. Just as distasteful as I find the air or superiority in some Reiki practitioners I also don’t like the air of inferiority… those that think they are below Reiki or can’t do it or aren’t so skillfull.

As is true with Yoga, one should never endeavor to compare their Reiki experience to that of another person… it is only a true comparison if you compare it with yourself.  As in Yoga, everyone’s body is created different, some can touch their toes easily because their legs are shorter… that does not mean the yoga practitioner who can’t touch their toes is inferior in any way. So too with Reiki, there is no way to compare, its like apples and oranges, so never let another practitioner make you feel inferior your Reiki experience is exactly what it needs to be… no more, no less.

There are other perceptions and attitudes like…

  • those who are Reiki doubters or skeptics
  • those who try to make Reiki more difficult than it really is
  • those that put too much emphasis on only one of the pillars of Reiki     (while insinuating the others are not important)
  • those that add an air of religion, mystery, Sorcery (magic) or Secrecy to Reiki

On the other hand;

These are neither good nor bad in the perceptions and attitudes I’ve seen.  Personally, I find all these different perceptions rather refreshing…After all, if we all felt or experienced the same way about everything- We would miss the lessons and teachings in life!

Reiki is organic, and as such cannot be put in a box-

“Step outside the box”.

Reiki must be allowed to breathe and grow or it will suffocate.  The Reiki process and experience is different for everyone in some form or another. Each person is on their personal Reiki path and just because it is a different path than that of another Reiki Practitioner does not make it any less real.  In order to truly be enlightened one must overcome the ego and share the process.

I’m the first to admit that I have a lot to learn and I am just trying to piece life’s mystery together the same as everyone else. The truth be told, the answers that count are those that come from within…your inner wisdom!

I will continue to share what I learn in the hopes that others will do the same; those that care to, we can work together to understand that which needs to be understood.  Every client and student I have ever sat with has touched me with
Enlighten Growth in some form at many Levels.  “I start my days with “as I set my ego aside…”

Consider the perceptions of others, that is how we learn.  How big is your “box of thought”, it is different for everyone…. Step outside your box of thoughts and perception… continue to learn and share.  Namaste’

I can certainly agree that stepping outside the box has a way of making life a little easier to understand and live….someone else’s box is not always entirely my perspective on life.and therefore not necessarily my box…I have been willing to take a risk or so for my own development and it has always been rewarding, even if not immediately….I love your Reiki kimberlee, it has so much it offers to me and my growth….thank you….pam
